How To Lead Your Child To Christ
1. Everyone has sinned
Ask him what sin is.
Explain sin is anything we do that God has told us not to do.
Ask him to give you examples of what sin is. Then ask if he has ever sinned.
Read Romans 3:23
2. The penalty for sin is death
Explain that people get paid money for the work they do at their jobs. In the same way, sin has a payment and it is death
Share Romans 6:23a
Since we both have sinned, our payment is death!
3. Jesus Christ died for your sin
BUT! Someone else paid for our sin! Jesus! He took our place and died so we don't have to. Jesus never did anything wrong; he never sinned. He chose to die on a cross so that He could pay for our sin.
Share the rest of Romans 6:23b
After Jesus died, he came back to life
Share 1 Corinthians 15:3,4
4. Receive Jesus Christ as your Savior
Romans 6:23 says that God gave us a very special gift, the gift of life with him and Jesus forever in heaven.
You can receive that very special gift from God. It's as easy as ABC!
A- Admit that you are a sinner
B- Believe that Jesus died for your sins, that He was buried and is now alive.
C- Call upon Jesus to save you
Sample Prayer: God I know I am a sinner. I believe you sent Jesus to die for my sins. I want you to save me from my sin so I can go to be with you in heaven someday. In Jesus' name. Amen.
What's Next?
- Ask your child to tell you what he did to be saved from his sins.
- Celebrate with your child! Show him how excited you are that he has made this most important decision!
- Reassure him that he cannot lose his salvation. Share John 10:28-29
- Now, ask him what a baby needs to do to grow (eat)
Then explain that he needs to grow too and there are several things he can do to grow.
First thing God wants him to do is get baptized. Explain this is one way he can obey God and show everyone what God has done for him. - God also wants him to talk to him (prayer), just like you and him are talking.
- God wants to be his best friend and wants him to get to know him. Explain the way he can do that is by reading the Bible, God's message to him.
- God wants him to go to church so he can learn more about him and can be friends with other people who also love him.
- God wants him to share the happy news with others!
- Reassure your child that being a christian doesn't mean he will never sin again. We still sin but now we actually can choose not to sin because Jesus has given us the power to say NO to sin. (Romans 6:14). Now, instead of trying to obey God so that we can earn our way to heaven, we obey God because we love him so much and we are so thankful for all he has done for us. Read John 14:23.
(just like he does nice things for you, the parent, not because he wants you to love him but because he is so happy that you are his dad/mom and he just wants to show you how much he loves you).
